Special Wastes

Agricultural Waste

Generators are urged to return agricultural wastes (e.g.. pesticide and herbicides) to the point of purchase for handling in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. These wastes may be accepted through the county Household Hazardous Waste program. Empty chemical containers are NOT accepted for recycling.

Animal Carcasses
Residents should contact private industries for assistance with dead animals. They are not normally accepted at the county Transfer Station.

Coffey County accepts large animals under a special waste authorization for the Kansas Animal Health Department. Wild animals, such as road killed deer, may also be accepted for burial in a remote area of the landfill.

Asbestos

Generators are urged to make their own disposal arrangements. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment maintains a list of approved contractors. Both friable and non-friable asbestos may be accepted in the landfills in Coffey and Shawnee Counties, while under a unique solid waste disposal authorizations issued by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Only non-friable asbestos may be accepted for disposal in a Construction and Demolition Landfill or under a special permit in most counties. Any asbestos that has been commingled with Municipal Solid Waste is NOT accepted.

Bulky Items

Larger, bulky items may be accepted at the county Transfer Station and landfills in Coffey and Shawnee Counties, but will be subject to approval by county staff or the landfill Supervisor. Most counties will charge a fee.

Shawnee County Solid Waste Department offers one large item pick-up per week, free of charge. Additional items may be accepted free of charge during annual “Spring Clean-up” or “Countywide Cleanup” events. Some counties may have limits on the weight / volume accepted, or restrictions on the types of items accepted.

Car Wash Sludge
This sludge is typically disposed of through municipal wastewater treatment facilities. It is not normally accepted at any of the county Transfer Stations, but may be accepted at the the landfills in Coffey and Shawnee Counties.

Industrial Waste

Coffey and Shawnee Counties, who have Subtitle D Landfills, may accept and disposed of regular commercial waste according to landfill operating regulations. Construction materials or clean rubble are the only waste that can be accepted into a county Construction and Demolition Landfill. Industrial wastes are NOT accepted as part of regular Municipal Solid Waste at a county Transfer Station.

Junk Vehicles / Farm Equipment
Residents and businesses are expected to contact private vendors or licensed salvage dealers who accept junk autos and trucks. These items are not accepted at the county Transfer Station or Landfill for disposal. In some cases, collection and temporary storage of abandoned vehicles, machinery, and metal may be done at the Transfer Station until arrangements are made with a private contractor.

Medical Waste and Sharps

There are no dedicated medical waste facilities in the counties, so generators are expected to contract with a licensed disposal service. Most county Health Departments have an outlet for medical waste and may assist with the disposal of sharps.

These items are not accepted at the county Transfer Station, Landfill, or Household Hazardous Waste program - with the exception of Shawnee County, where residents have the option to dispose of their unwanted and outdated medications, containers filled with needles and other sharp items, as well as hazardous materials through the Household Hazardous Waste program.

Natural Disaster Waste
County Solid Waste Departments will work with the County Emergency Management Coordinator to follow established protocols for handling debris that is generated from a natural disaster.

Scrap Metal / White Goods
Residents are encouraged to call salvage contractors to dispose of scrap metals and white goods. These items may be brought to the county Transfer Station or Landfill for recycling or disposal. Some counties may charge a fee. Those items containing refrigerants will be separated, and the refrigerant will be reclaimed by trained personnel in accordance with EPA regulations prior to disposal.

In some cases, collection and temporary storage of abandoned vehicles, machinery, and metal may be done at the Transfer Station until arrangements are made with a private contractor.
