Municipal Solid Waste (Trash)
Solid waste collection is available to all county residences and businesses via private haulers. The cities of Osawatomie, Louisburg, Paola, and Spring Hill have contracts with Waste Management for residences and businesses, which also includes the option of recycling. Residents who live outside these city limits are expected to dispose of their refuse on an individual basis or through a private hauler, as Miami County does not finance solid waste collection.

Most of the waste generated in the county is hauled by Waste Management or one of their subsidiaries (L&K Services and Town & Country Disposal). The rest is hauled by small private contractors or residents.

Waste Management also operated the county's transfer station, which is located on W 327th Street, just east of S Hospital Drive, about 4 miles south of Paola. County residents may haul solid waste to the transfer station using their own vehicles, during regular business hours. ** PPE is REQUIRED while at the Miami County Transfer Station. The Transfer Station will no longer be loaning this equipment out. Customers may bring in their own Hard Hat and Safety Vest or they may purchase them at the scales.
All waste coming to the transfer station is weighed and inspected at the scales by Waste Management and a tipping fee is charged. The waste then becomes their property, where they are responsible for the transportation and final disposal at their Johnson County Landfill in Shawnee.
Visit the county's website for the most up-to-date details and/or associated costs.
Construction / Demolition Debris
The county’s old Construction and Demolition landfill is closed to the public and can only be opened by the Road & Bridge Director on an emergency basis.

Individuals and businesses may haul construction debris or similar waste to the transfer station, where it will be managed and transported off-site through the county’s contract with Waste Management. Disposal fees are assessed according to the load weight.
Recycling
The county has assigned Waste Management the responsibility of facilitating recycling throughout the county, where they have included curbside recycling services within the solid waste contracts that have been established with the cities of Osawatomie, Louisburg, Paola, and Spring Hill.

County residents, living outside the city limits, may drop off items for recycling, at designated recycling area, which is adjacent to the transfer station. This recycling area is open during regular business hours and hosts multiple roll-off boxes to collect specific waste streams.

Waste Management allows residents and businesses to comingle some recycling materials, but there are some important conditions to follow to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the recycling process. Contaminated loads of recycling are disposed of trash and cost extra fees. Visit Waste Management's website for additional recycling instruction and tips.

Batteries
Used batteries are typically accepted at local battery dealers for recycling. Lead-acid and lithium batteries are accepted as part of the county’s HHW program in order to be recycled. Lead-acid batteries are also accepted at the compactor sites and the transfer station for collection prior to removal and recycling. Batteries will NOT be accepted into the general waste stream.
In order to reduce the risk for battery-related fires and to keep them out of the landfill, transfer station operators look for batteries while performing their random inspections of waste or recycling loads. EV batteries are NOT accepted at the transfer station or as part of the county's HHW program.

Electronic Waste
E-waste (computers, TVs, printers, DVD players, phones, etc.) is not currently being collected or accepted for recycling by the county. It will be treated as regular solid waste if collected or brought to the transfer station for disposal.
